Things to do in Mooloolaba

Mooloolaba sits at the mouth of the Mooloolah River and was first known as Mooloolah Heads. From the 1860s a timber depot and wharf worked the river, and between 1870 and 1884 the sheltered river mouth behind Point Cartwright was the main port for the Maroochy district. The name Mooloolaba came in about 1920, to tell the seaside town apart from the railway township of Mooloolah, and holiday cottages and guesthouses followed.

Things to do

  • Mooloolaba Beach: the coast's best-known swimming beach, patrolled all year and popular for bodyboarding.
  • The Spit: calmer water that families love, by the rock wall at the river mouth.
  • Rock pools just north of the main beach, for rock hopping and crab spotting.
  • The Coastal Pathway from the Mooloolah River to Alexandra Headland: 3.3 km one way and accessible.
  • Point Cartwright loop, Buddina: a 2 km circuit round the working lighthouse across the river, with rock pools and a free car park.
  • SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast on the Spit: the aquarium with the ocean tunnel, open since 1989. Paid entry.
  • The Wharf: the waterfront dining strip built on piles over the harbour.

Getting there

About 90 km north of Brisbane by road. The council's PARKnGO car park in Mooloolaba Central is free for up to four hours.
