Safety and terms
Play safe
Field rules // Read before you play
The rules of the hunt, the risks of playing outdoors, and the terms you agree to before every game.
Safety and terms
The Hunt Is On is run by BOXA Network (ABN 72 151 694 685), PO Box 1093, Nambour QLD 4560. In these terms, "we", "us" and "our" mean BOXA Network, which runs The Hunt Is On, and "you" means anyone who uses thehuntison.com.au or plays one of our games. You can contact us through our contact form.
These terms apply whenever you use the site or play. Before you start a game you tick a box to say you have read the safety rules and agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not play. Last updated 21 October 2026.
Play safe
Every game sends you to real places with real traffic, water, weather and people. The game is never more important than you are.
Roads. Follow the road rules. Cross at crossings and lights, look up from your phone before you step off the kerb, and never stand on the road to read a clue.
Driving. Never use the game while you are driving. In games played by car, a passenger reads the phone and you park legally before you play a stop.
Public places only. Stay on public land, paths and footpaths. Do not enter private property, closed areas or anywhere signed as off limits, and do not climb fences, walls, rocks, trees or structures.
Water and cliffs. Stay behind fences and well back from cliff edges, rock shelves, banks and the water. No clue is ever in the water, and no answer needs you to go near the edge.
Sun and weather. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen. Stop and come back another day in storms, extreme heat, high winds or poor light.
Your footing. Some routes have stairs, slopes, sand and uneven ground. Watch where you walk, wear suitable shoes, and carry a light if you play near dark.
Wildlife. Leave animals alone, keep to paths in bushland, and watch for snakes, insects and birds in nesting season.
Other people. Be polite to residents, businesses and anyone you pass. Nothing in our games asks you to bother people, break a rule or break the law.
Signs and directions. Obey signs, closures and local laws, and follow any direction from police, rangers, lifeguards, landowners or staff, even if it stops you finishing a game.
If a stop looks unsafe, closed or changed, skip it with the skip button and tell us through the contact form so we can fix it.
In an emergency, call 000.
Children
Players under 18 must play with a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms for them, ticks the box for them and supervises them for the whole game.
Teams
The person who starts a game for a team, or shares a team code, confirms that every player in the team has read the safety rules and agrees to these terms, and that any player under 18 is with a parent or guardian who supervises them.
Your health and fitness
Each game card shows how you get around, the time and the distance. You are responsible for deciding whether you and your group are fit and well enough to walk the route on the day, including any medical condition, injury, pregnancy or mobility need. Do not play while affected by alcohol or drugs. Take breaks whenever you need to: the clock only runs while you solve.
The risks you accept
Walking and exploring outdoors in public places has risks that cannot be removed, such as traffic, trips and falls, sun and heat, weather, water, wildlife, other people and the condition of paths and structures. These are obvious risks of the activity. By playing you accept them, you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of anyone in your care, and you play at your own risk.
Your responsibility
- You are responsible for your own conduct, belongings, phone, vehicle and parking, and for any fines or costs you incur while playing.
- You must not damage, mark or move anything at a stop, or take anything from it.
- To the extent the law allows, you agree to cover any claim, loss or cost we suffer because you broke these terms, broke the law or acted carelessly or deliberately while playing, including damage you cause to other people or their property.
Game information, maps and GPS
Routes, maps, distances, times, directions and GPS positions are a guide only. Phones and GPS can be wrong, and places change after we walk them. Do not rely on the game to tell you where it is safe or lawful to go: use your own judgement and what you see on the day.
Places and businesses
Our games pass public places, landmarks and businesses that we do not own or control. We are not responsible for their condition, opening hours, products, services or rules. A stop near a business never means you have to buy anything.
Changes to games
We may change, pause or withdraw a game, route or stop at any time, for example for safety, weather, works, events or a change at a site.
Our part
We plan routes with care, choose public places and test-walk every route before it launches.
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any right or remedy you have, or any guarantee, warranty or other term implied or imposed by the Australian Consumer Law, that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or changed.
Recreational services
Our games are recreational services. To the extent the law allows, including section 139A of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), our liability for death, physical or mental injury (including the aggravation, acceleration or recurrence of an injury), or the contraction, aggravation or acceleration of a disease, that arises from a failure to provide the services with due care and skill is excluded. This does not apply where the death or injury is caused by our reckless conduct.
Other limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for loss of or damage to your phone, vehicle or other belongings, or for any indirect or consequential loss, while you play;
- where the law lets us limit our liability for a failure to meet a consumer guarantee, our liability is limited to supplying the game again or refunding what you paid for it.
Accounts, codes and scoreboards
- Play fair. Times, scores and claims must be your own. We may remove a time, a name or an account that is offensive, not genuine or breaks these terms.
- Display names must not be offensive, impersonate anyone or include contact details.
- Keep your sign-in details to yourself. You are responsible for what happens on your account.
Party games
Murder in the Dark, Snooze Bandit, Spot the Blow-in and Which Would Ya? are free. The games in Party Pack 01 need the host to own the pack (see Packs). One person opens a party room on their account (the host), and everyone else joins with the room's code, signed in or as a guest. There are no prizes: scores are just for fun.
If you're the host, you agree to:
- share the room's code only with people playing with you;
- supervise any players under 18, or make sure their parent or guardian agrees and is supervising;
- choose family mode whenever anyone under 18 is playing (grown-ups mode is only for rooms where everyone is 18 or over);
- check typed lines before they show and hide anything unkind, rude or personal;
- end the party if someone won't play by these rules.
What you can type. Some games ask you to type short lines. Keep them about you, and keep them kind. Don't type:
- anything sexual, or anything that harms or exploits a child;
- threats, bullying, put-downs or hate about anyone's race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or looks;
- anything that promotes terrorism, violence, crime or drugs;
- anyone's private details: addresses, phone numbers, schools, email or full names;
- links or ads.
The host can hide any line, and anyone can report one. We may close a party room, or stop someone using our party games, if these rules are broken. What you type is deleted when the party ends (see our privacy page).
Lights-out games (Murder in the Dark). Playing in the dark has obvious risks: trips, bumps and falls. Before the lights go out:
- clear the floor, and choose a room with no stairs, glass doors, pools or balconies nearby;
- everyone walks, nobody runs;
- agree a stop word, and put the lights on straight away when anyone says it;
- with younger players, a grown-up stays in the room next to the light switch;
- anyone who'd rather not play in the dark can be the light keeper, or you can play the lights-on version (Wink Murder);
- don't play lights-out after drinking alcohol.
You play at your own risk, and the host is responsible for the room and the people in it. The sections above on the risks you accept, recreational services and the limits on our liability apply to party games to the extent the law allows. Nothing here limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Ages. Each game shows a suggested age. These are guides for families, not official classifications.
Paid games
- Our games are digital. Paid games are digital games you play in your phone's web browser, on your player account. There's nothing to download or post. You need a phone with an up-to-date browser and an internet connection; some games also use the camera, microphone or motion sensors, and each game says so on its page. Try our free Test your phone page, and the free first chapter of any paid game, before you buy.
- What you get. A purchase unlocks the full game on your player account, so you can play it on any phone you sign in on, for as long as we offer the game. If we stop offering a game within 3 years of your purchase, we'll swap it for another game or refund what you paid, your choice. You need an account to buy.
- Who can buy. Purchases are made by the account holder, who must be 18 or over, or a parent or guardian buying for a child.
- Teams. One purchase covers your team. Friends who join your team room for that game, with its code or link, play along free while the room is open. They don't own the game: to play it again on their own, they can buy it (see "Host again" below).
- Updates. We may update a game, for example to fix a puzzle or change a stop that has closed. Your purchase covers the game as it is updated.
- Our games stay ours. The stories, puzzles, art, music and voices in our games belong to us or the people we licensed them from. A purchase lets you play; please don't copy, record and share, or sell them.
- Prices. Every game and pack shows its price, in Australian dollars, on its card and again before you pay, and you pay exactly that price. There are no booking or card fees. We're not registered for GST, so our prices include no GST and Stripe's receipts aren't tax invoices.
- Launch prices. When a game has a launch price, its card shows the launch price, the date it ends and the price after it. If you buy at the launch price, the game is yours at that price.
- Paying. Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. Stripe emails your receipt.
Our promise: problems and refunds
If something goes wrong on our side (a puzzle won't work, the story breaks, or the game won't run and we can't fix it), tell us within 30 days of buying and we'll fix it, swap it for another game, or refund you: your choice. Bought a game and haven't played past the free first chapter? Ask within 14 days and we'll refund it, no questions asked. Ask from your account page under Purchases; a person checks every request and emails you the answer. A refund doesn't return a $2 next-game voucher. Nothing here limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Packs
- Packs. A pack unlocks every game listed in it, on your player account, in one purchase. The pack's page lists every game in it by name before you buy. You get the games in the pack when you buy it; we don't promise that more games will be added.
- Party Pack 01. A$15 launch price until 31 January 2027, then A$25 (Brisbane time; the price at checkout is the one that applies), for the 10 party games listed on its page. Only the host needs the pack: the host opens a party room on their account, and everyone else joins free with the room's code, signed in or as a guest. Guests never need to buy. The party games rules apply to every party room.
- How long a pack lasts. Packs don't expire. The games in a pack are yours for as long as we offer them. If we stop offering a game in a pack within 3 years of your purchase, we'll add another game to the pack in its place, or refund the whole pack, your choice.
- Our promise for packs. If a game in a pack goes wrong on our side and we can't fix it, we'll add another game in its place or refund the whole pack, your choice. Changed your mind? Ask within 14 days of buying and we'll refund the whole pack, no questions asked. Refunds for a pack are for the whole pack, and a refund takes the whole pack off your account. This is on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
- Discounts. The $2 next-game voucher and the host-again price don't apply to packs, and packs don't earn a $2 voucher.
$2 off your next game, and host again
- $2 off your next game. Finish a game while signed in, solo or in a team room, and you get $2 off your next game. It's for any paid game, it's taken off automatically at checkout, and it lasts 30 days. You get one per game you finish, once per game, and you can use one per purchase. It isn't cash, can't be moved to another account, and isn't returned if the purchase it was given for, or used on, is refunded. Guests don't get one.
- Host again. Played a game in a friend's team room but don't own it? Buy it at half price to host it for your own group. If you already own a game, hosting it again is free.
Gift cards and account balance
Gift cards are not on sale yet. This section applies from the day they go on sale.
- What a gift card is. A gift card is a code worth $10, $25 or $50 to spend on games and packs on The Hunt Is On. You don't need an account to buy one. Whoever redeems the code needs a free player account.
- No expiry. Gift cards and the balance they add never expire.
- Redeeming. Each code can be redeemed once. Its full amount goes onto the player account it's redeemed on, as a balance in Australian dollars. A balance can't be moved to another account or swapped for cash.
- Spending. When you buy a game or pack, your balance is used first and any rest is paid by card through Stripe. If it costs less than your balance, the rest stays on your account.
- Keep the code safe. Anyone with the code can redeem it. If a code you bought is lost before it's redeemed, tell us through the contact form with your receipt and we'll cancel it and send a new one.
- Refunds. Gift cards aren't refundable for a change of mind. If we refund a gift card, its code is cancelled; a code that has already been redeemed can't be refunded. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law always apply.
- Deleting your account. If you delete your player account, its balance is removed and can't be restored. We warn you before you confirm, and you can ask us to refund unspent gift card balance first.
- If we stop. If we ever stop offering paid games, we'll email everyone with a balance. Unspent balance that came from a gift card, if it's $5 or more, is refunded to the card that paid for the gift card when you ask within 90 days of that email. Games and packs bought within 3 years before we stop are swapped or refunded as set out in "What you get" and "How long a pack lasts". Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law always apply.
Disputed payments
If you think a charge is wrong, please ask us first through your account page or the contact form: it's usually quicker. You can always dispute a payment with your bank. While a dispute is open, the game, pack, gift card or balance it paid for is paused. If the dispute ends with the money back with you, the purchase counts as refunded and stays off your account; if it's withdrawn or decided in our favour, we switch it straight back on. Nothing else on your account is affected.
Testers
We sometimes invite people to test games before they launch. Tester access is free, isn't a purchase, and we can end it at any time. Feedback you send through a game's feedback button helps us improve our games; we can use it freely and don't pay for it. Please keep unreleased games to yourself.
Your photos
Photos you take in a game stay on your phone unless you choose to share them. Only photograph places and people where you have the right to.
Privacy
How we handle your details is set out on our privacy page.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version, and a game asks you to tick the box again after a change.
General
- If any part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- These terms, the safety rules and the privacy page are the whole agreement between you and us about using the site and playing our games.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of Queensland, Australia, and you and we submit to the courts of Queensland.
