Things to do in Coolum Beach

Coolum Beach is a surf town on the Sunshine Coast's north shore, with a long patrolled beach, a main street of cafés and shops facing the sea, and a boardwalk that climbs to the lookout on Point Perry. Behind it all stands Mount Coolum, the flat-topped mountain the town is named after.

Things to do

  • The beach: patrolled by lifeguards, so swim between the flags. Rips and strong currents are common on this stretch.
  • The boardwalk to Point Perry: a coastal walk from the beach up to the lookout on the headland, a favourite spot for a picnic.
  • Whale watching: from the Point Perry lookout in the humpback season, roughly June to November.
  • Mount Coolum: a steep 1.6 km return climb, about two hours, to a 208 m summit with views up and down the coast. Grade 4: for fit walkers in fine weather only.
  • Point Arkwright and Lows Lookout: two more coastal lookouts just south of town.

Getting there

About 120 km north of Brisbane, and a short drive north of Sunshine Coast Airport. The main street, David Low Way, runs right along the beachfront.

Did you know?

  • The name comes from a local Aboriginal word, recorded as gulum or kulum, thought to describe Mount Coolum's blunt, flat top.
  • Mount Coolum is an old volcanic plug: the hard core of a volcano left standing after the softer rock around it wore away.
  • Before the tourists came, Coolum grew sugarcane, and a cane tramway ran through the district in the 1920s.
